One of the "interesting" tricks some houses in the US have is a fireplace with "artificial" logs and hidden gas pipe's inside. These take but a turn of a knob to ignite - a far cry from the kerosene started, wood kindled, coal fireplaces I used to light in Kasauli as a kid.
Spent the evening at Country Club - a resort on the outskirts of the city - sharing experiences with a team from work, grouped around a small fire. Getting the fire started, when all you have to burn is wood, is easy :). It's amazing the tales one can dreg up from the workplace, many, many years after they've ceased to be embarassing!
