Watched Last Samurai and Dr. Strangelove over the weekend!

Watched the first at Skyline, a quaint little theatre in Secunderabad, where balcony tickets are only Rs. 30! I'd thought I'd missed the movie, after Prasad's stopped screening it - but I'm glad we chanced past Skyline after a biryani dinner at Cafe Bahar. Watched Strangelove at home - after borrowing a DVD from Hyderabad's new hip and happening DVD library, Cinema Paradiso. It's nice to have a place sans stolen, grainy, cinema hall prints - and a collection that spans across into "world" and "classic" cinema too!

Both were very watchable. I've seen Last Samurai described as "Braveheart Visits Japan" - and that's probably not very far from the truth :). Very engaging dialogue - and amazing fight sequences! Dr. Strangelove is an amazing piece of black comedy on nuclear war - it delivers well the message about the irony of nuclear warfare and the danger of having so much destructive power on tap - and is as watchable after the cold war and almost 40 years. Highly recommended for Kubrick fans. But then if you're a Kubrick fan - you've probably already seen this movie :)

One of the "interesting" tricks some houses in the US have is a fireplace with "artificial" logs and hidden gas pipe's inside. These take but a turn of a knob to ignite - a far cry from the kerosene started, wood kindled, coal fireplaces I used to light in Kasauli as a kid.

Spent the evening at Country Club - a resort on the outskirts of the city - sharing experiences with a team from work, grouped around a small fire. Getting the fire started, when all you have to burn is wood, is easy :). It's amazing the tales one can dreg up from the workplace, many, many years after they've ceased to be embarassing!
